A Matter of Elements in Nature
Our ancestors believed that there were 4 elements which led humanity to transition from chaos to a settled life. These elements are fire, earth, water and air. Scientist have examined these four elements in four states: solid, liquid, gas and plasma. Alchemy describes the four elements as blood fire, body earth, emotional water, breathing air, and a fifth element described as the elements of the human spirit. While the explanations for these elements have differed over time, their importance has remained a constant. Earth symbolizes the physical body and material world. It is steady, feminine, and difficult to change. It consists of both creation and extinction, and is the foundation of our existence. It is humility, fertility and compassion.

Our ancestors believed that human beings consisted of these 4 elements, and that illnesses and differences in behavior originated from these elements. You get the idea: If you are having efficiency problems and complaining about being disorganized, it is a good idea to step on some earth. At the end of the day, we came from the earth and we will end up in the earth.
