The Matter of Life in Hopi Culture

This symbol, belonging to the Hopi people of North Arizona, known as Hopituh Shi-nu-mu (meaning "peaceful people"), traces its origins to the labyrinth, the oldest symbol in the world. "Tapuat," meaning mother and child, symbolizes the cycle of life and the inner journey of the human being, starting from the umbilical cord. It represents Mother Nature, the Earth, and life, the child of the Earth. The seven-fold labyrinth references the seven energy centers (chakras), the seven notes, and the seven colors of the rainbow.
