The Bee of Ephesus

The bee, the sacred animal of Artemis of Ephesus, also known as the Queen of Bees, is one of the most important symbols of the city of Ephesus. It was frequently used in coins, architecture, and the statue of Artemis herself. In fact, because the bee was the goddess's sacred animal, the temple priestesses were given the name "Melissae," meaning "honeybee." Some experts suggest that the connection between the goddess and the bee originates from a Hittite myth that highlights the transformative power of nature and emphasizes the bee's significance in understanding the spring-autumn cycle. (In the myth, when the Hittite god of agriculture and fertility, Telepinu, falls asleep in a cave, nature also falls into a slumber and famine strikes the land. A tiny bee sent by the goddess stings Telepinu, waking him up and, in turn, reviving nature.)

Thus, the bee, symbol of the Great Goddess and Ephesus, became "Mesele-ized" with its transformative power, industriousness, and ability to multiply.
