Sankofa

Sankofa

A Matter of Learning in Africa

The Akan tribe, who live on the shores of Western Africa, have a system of symbols which they call Adinkra, one of which is called ‘Sankofa’. This symbolizes the proverb ‘There is no shame in returning to the past in order to remember what is forgotten’. The Akan philosophy believes that the future will be built from the values of the past, which symbolizes their deep respect for their roots and their past.
