Enamel Jewellery

Enamel is an art of adornment by glazing a metal surface with glass. The glass powder used in enameling is obtained by mixing and heating various chemicals with the metal oxides that will provide the wanted colors. Because of its brittleness, the oldest samples are the ones applied on crocks by Egyptians in 1300 B.C.E. Art of enamel had reached perfection in Byzantine Istanbul between 5th and 10th centuries. From there, around 12th century, it had spread to Germany and France. The ottoman goldsmiths had started using enamel as an alternative for coloring the jewelry in the 14th century.
